Web Scavenger Hunt Lesson Plan - Spiders


Subject Matter: Language Arts

Grade Level: 2nd Grade

Lesson Objective:  Learners will demonstrate knowledge of understanding facts and characteristics of a spider and the ability to write an informative text using the information they have found.

Common Core State Standard and/or Academic Content Standard:
Writing Standards K-5
Grade 2
Text Types and Purposes 2 - Write informative/explanatory texts in which they introduce a topic, use facts and definitions to develop points, and provide a concluding statement or section. 

Technology Standard: NETS for Students:
5c. Students break problems into component parts, extract key information, and develop descriptive models to understand complex systems or facilitate problem-solving.

Website Addresses Used as Resources: 
This site gives interesting facts about spiders that students can use for their writing.
This site will be used to learn spider characteristics as well as different kinds of spiders.  Students can use the pictures to help them with their drawing on their final piece.
Using this site will allow students to watch a quick video that will give spider facts and teach students characteristics spiders may have. 
This site will show students the life cycle of a spider. 

Student Research Questions:
Essential Question: 
1. What are some interesting facts about spiders and what special characteristics might some spiders have?

3. What is the life cycle of a spider?
4.  How many eggs can a spider lay?
5.  How many different types of spiders are there?
6.  How many legs and eyes do spiders have?
7.  Where do spiders live (habitat)?
8.  What do spiders eat and how do they get their food?
9.  What is a web?
10.  Spiders have characteristics such as the ones listed in the image as well as fangs, venom, and silk.  Define at least two characteristics. 

Assessment:
Students used the internet to gather information and learn facts and characteristics about spiders on their own.  Students will draw a picture on the blank half of their paper and will write a 5-sentence informational text about spiders using facts, definitions, and a conclusion.
